For Far too Long. . . Animation aimed towards an Adult Audience is Mean-Spirited, full of Unlikable Characters/Unlikable People. . . and trying to be more like South Park or Family Guy. . . and I'm Just Sick of seeing these things. . . Seriously. . . There's Allen Gregory, Brickleberry, and ESPECIALLY Netflix's Hoops; Why do People Feel the need to make things just all-around Unpleasant?! and While Bojack Horseman is a critically acclaimed show; It's just too depressing for someone like me. . . Thankfully things ARE Getting better with Gems like Bob's Burgers & JG Quintel's Close Enough series on HBO Max. . . The Marriage & Relationship of Bob & Linda Belcher; as well as Josh Singleton & Emily Ramirez are a WHOLE Lot more endearing & a Whole Lot less toxic than Beth & Jerry Smith, Lois & Peter Griffin, Homer & Marge, any other example of Toxic Relationships in This medium. . . There are legitimately heartwarming moments in these show; Bob & Gene aren't as Hateful towards each other as Homer Strangling Bart; I'm Just curious what YOU, mrenter would consider the Best of Adult Animation. . .

Well, off the top of my head there's: American Dad Drawn Together (i.e. how to make unlikable characters work) The Venture Bros Stone Quackers Dr. Katz Celebrity Deathmatch

Here are MY Favorite Adult Cartoons of all Time:
1. Bob's Burgers[Likable Characters, Healthy Depiction of Marriage; a Family that legitimately cares for one another; Bob's NOT A DumbA** Dad and is the (MOSTLY) Straight Man to his Family's Wacky Antics]
2. Close Enough(Likable Characters; Healthy Marriage; Still has JG Quintel's Auto-biographic Style from Regular Show; and Focuses on Millenial Parents who are just as much People as they are Parents, For better or worse; But they still clearly care about their Daughter's Well-Being, but they're also flawed People with their own problems)
3. King of the Hill(It's one of the more MILDER Adult Animations there have ever been; It Doesn't need to lower itself to the levels of South Park or Family Guy; And It's Grounded to Reality; Not Wacky like The Simpsons)
4. The Critic (It's a Highly Underrated show about a Divorced Film Critic & His Son; and is EXTREMELY Meta Considering how Relevent the career of Critics have become in the Digital Age; Including Mr. Enter Himself. . . I'd Love to see the show get a brand new 3rd Season on Crackle, Sony's Free Streaming Platform; which Both 2 seasons of the Critic can be found on, BTW; that takes place 30 years after season 2 ended; with an Adult Marty; an Adult Version of Jay Sherman's Girlfriend's Daughter; and See How Jay Sherman will adapt to the age of the Internet where he has to compete with other Critics on the internet. . . by Starting his OWN Youtube Channel for Coming Attractions)
5. Daria (I Love Her Dry sense of Humor)

I choose not just Primal, but also Tuca and Bertie.
Primal is what I can best describe as a beautiful work of art, and pretty much Samurai Jack season 5 done better (right down to having the same creator). The first 11 minutes alone was enough to win me over. I still wish that certain people could find some time to watch it… ;P
As for Tuca and Bertie, it’s basically BoJack Horseman for women, except more fun, crazy, and surprisingly very gentle. In fact, I actually like it a bit more than BoJack, but I understand if it’s not for everyone.

I love Primal, it is just sheer, and well, primal, artistic beauty and passion and emotion. I don't like it quite as much as Samurai Jack but it's close.
But Invincible is my favorite one so far. I really need to read the comic, but the series so far is fantastic. I really wish more people gave it a chance.
There are a lot of other adult cartoons that I like a lot that don't get talked about enough: The Boondocks, Black Dynamite, Spawn, The Maxx, Aeon Flux, Harvey Birdman, Sealab 2021, and Space Ghost Coast to Coast.

I don't know about the Boondocks not getting talked about enough. The others, sure, but the Boondocks is, from what I can tell, one of Adult Swim's most popular shows. Maybe even the most popular of the 2000's besides ATHF.

why is it that there was basically no adult animation that wasn't comedy, until a few years ago, ( the only exceptions I can think of are HBO Spawn and MTV Spiderman) is it because it was cheaper just to dub anime?

I think it's a matter of audience, or lack thereof. It's no trouble, we get an action or drama series every so often. Don't forget, before people hated it, Netflix gave us shows like F is for Family and Castlevania.

In addition to the Castlevania series, there’s also Aggretsuko, which happens to be my favorite adult series.

Netflix also has Blood of Zeus, which I haven't checked out yet but I don't think it'll be as good as Castlevania. On the subject of netflix, there's this beautiful looking show called Trese which is supposed to come out some time this year. They also have Dragon Prince but I don't know if that is exactly adult animation.

In A Japanese Society. . . That depicts things that "Squeaky-Clean" Disney would never allow to be shown in their movies; Seinen is Basically anime & Manga aimed towards Young Adults, in particular young adult men; whereas Shonen is more All-Ages; But primarily aimed towards a Younger Audience, particularly Boys and there's also Housebroken. . . which is Basically EVERY "What is your pet doing when you're not around" story; except it's Explicitly aimed towards an Adult Audience; With Swearing, Live Birth, and one episode ending up with a Half-Digested Hamster There are PLENTY of Talking Pet Animations for Kids; LPS, The Secret Life of Pets, The OG Clifford Cartoon, And Several others; But How many of these "talking pet shows" are actually Aimed towards an Adult Audience; P.S. Adult Animations with Bipedal Anthropomorphic Animal Characters DO NOT COUNT; Such as Bojack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie, or Beastars!

I have yet to see Beastars (and Zootopia for that matter), but the 2.5D animation seems like a turn-off for me despite Haru the rabbit actually looking decent. As for Housebroken, I keep forgetting to watch that; it sounds quite refreshing from the usual adult cartoon.

I don't know why people hate the animation in Studio Ghibli's Earwig and the Witch but like the animation in Beastars. Even if Earwig and the Witch looks cheap for Hollywood theatrical animation (even if it is an anime TV film), at least it isn't yet another low-framerate 2.5D anime. The animation in Earwig, despite being CGI, was inspired by Aardman and Laika's stop-motion. Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings in particular.

Arcane is another great recent adult animation from Netflix. It's a League of Legends spinoff, but you don't need to have played LoL to get the story. In fact, I love Arcane even if I am someone who doesn't want to touch League of Legends.
Netflix also made another animated show based on League's rival DOTA 2. It's called DOTA: Dragon's Blood, and it's also decent, but not as good as Arcane. I actually prefer DotA over League, but I don't even play much MOBAs in the first place.
Marvel Studios' What If...? is also technically adult animation because it's rated TV-14 (and it has some really dark episodes like the Zombies one, plus some violence and language that wouldn't fly on Disney Channel or Disney XD). But like almost everything Marvel Studios makes, it's technically aimed at a general audience of both kids and adults. (but not the Marvel Television shows, which aim for an older audience)
What If...? had some really good episodes but others just felt mid, and a character just pops out of nowhere in the finale because their episode was moved to Season 2 at the last minute. It's also great how What If...? was essentially used as a platform to make multiverse stories that wouldn't happen on the Sacred Timeline. And it's also a platform for branching out to other genres like a zombie apocalypse, a murder mystery whodunnit with the Avengers being assassinated, a Lovecraftian horror story about Doctor Strange desperately trying to save the life of his love, a fratboy party comedy with Thor, and the MCU going full Wolfenstein by having a HYDRA-summoned Lovecraftian horror that has to be defeated by Captain Carter. What If...? is a good recent adult animation, and it's one of the high points of Phase Four of the MCU. Unlike most people, I still love most of the recent MCU films and shows, even Eternals, especially Eternals. She-Hulk was probably the only thing I didn't like that much, and this is coming from someone who loved Captain Marvel.
